What are the success rates of inpatient rehab for alcohol?

in Success | Comments (6)

My husband just went to an inpatient rehab. He hit rock bottom and voluntarily went. He seems to be putting every effort into it. I am just concerned that that success rates are not great. I understand that when he gets home he will still have to go to meetings and probably do some intensive outpatient therapy. How much do the rates improve for those that continue on for more therapy and meetings compared to those that do not?

Just a cursory glance at the internet could give you tons of statistics on the "success" and "failure" rates of rehab. And they would all say different things, some bleak and some optimistic. I would encourage you not to read into statistics because those based on other people and their experiences (and not yours, your family or most importantly your husband’s).

Alcoholism is a disease that could strike anyone, regardless of status, income, occupation, age, gender, race, sexual orientation or creed. There is no uniformity and each person’s struggle is different.

Inpatient rehab is a wonderful opportunity for a person to learn the coping mechanisms and relapse prevention techniques vital to staying sober in a safe environment. But inpatient does not help a person in creating a new life wherein alcohol is no longer a threat once he’s out.

So it becomes much more beneficial to continue on with groups, therapies and meetings so that he can begin to make said changes in his daily routine. At the same time, he will rely on his family in being open and honest about his recovery. Recovery is more possible when his support group is just that: supportive, and not shaming, judgmental or scared.

Recovery and the criteria of success is different for each person. For some, it’s 12 steps; others, one difficult cold-turkey-grit-your-teeth-and-bare-it step. Your husband will have an idea of what he needs to stay sober so that he isn’t triggered into relapse. Listen to him — he is the greatest indicator of his own success.

How would our economy change if we became a nation of savers instead of spenders?

in Economy | Comments (7)

This is a big if hypothetical question. Surely, there would be huge changes in the dynamics of economy. I curious what some of this changes would be.

Be careful who you listen to on this subject. A lot of economists are die-hard Keynesians and they are all going to parrot the answer: savers hurt the economy.

In reality, this is only true in certain circumstances. If we did not change our national financial policy as it exists right now and suddenly the American populace starting saving more then YES, savers would hurt the economy, but it it is perfectly possibe to craft a viable and healthy economy with a nation of savers. In fact, I believe such an economy would do far better than how ours is currently set up.

Right now the American economic policy hurts savers. Steady inflation between 5% and 12% (depending on how you calculate it) creates very little incentive to hoard money, and puts a great deal of pressure on the citizen to invest unused money in riskier higher yield investments in an attempt to beat inflation.

Would the Great Depression have occurred if the monopolies of the early 20th century were left intact?

in Depression | Comments (1)

These companies were huge! Would FDR have to bail them out during the Depression? Or was it more like the Compromise of 1850, only delaying the inevitable onslaught of the Depression? Would the Great Depression have occurred earlier?

It is hard to say of course but there were a number of factor affecting the Great Depression.

There has never been one consensus explanation for the Great Depression. Since 1929, economists and historians have developed a number of competing theories to explain the American economy’s disastrous performance in the 1930s, and their debates over the true causes of the Depression—which have profound public-policy implications even today—have often been quite contentious.

Government bonds: Wide-spread worries

Spreads widen alarmingly on government bonds in troubled euro-area economies

GREECE’S debt was downgraded by Standard & Poor’s to “junk” status on Tuesday April 27th, driven in part by fears about delays in aid for Greece from the European Union and the IMF. The agency also cut Portugal’s debt rating by two notches. The moves provided another jolt to euro-area bond markets and added to worries that a bail-out for Greece, even if it came soon, would only delay a default. Contagion has already hit other troubled European economies. Yields on two-year Greek notes rose above 25% on Wednesday, from 4.6% a month ago. Spreads between ten-year Greek bonds and benchmark German bunds the day before spiked to nearly seven percentage points. Spreads also rose substantially for bonds issued by Portugal and Ireland, but only slightly for Italian and Spanish government debt.

Britain’s election: Voters, meet Gordon

in Economy | Comments (2)

Britain’s prime minister produces a great political blunder

“THAT was a disaster,” said Gordon Brown after an encounter with a voter that had not gone according to the script on Wednesday April 28th. In fact the incident was nothing compared with his accidentally keeping a broadcast microphone attached to his lapel which picked up that remark, and the rest of a conversation with his aides, as they retreated to Mr Brown’s Jaguar. “They should never have put me with that woman,” he added out of the corner of his mouth, smiling and waving to the crowd all the while. “Whose idea was that?” The kicker came after Mr Brown and his team drove away: “she was just a sort of bigoted woman that said she used to be Labour.” …
